Green Roofs - More than just a Pretty Roof Garden!
February 14, 2014 | Blog
You may have noticed over the last 10 plus years, buildings popping up that are incorporating “green” spaces, in areas you may not expect to find them. These literally “living” roofs and walls are being incorporated into new designs and rejuvenating older buildings that are sometimes eyesores.
There are examples of exceptional use of Living Green Roofs starting to emerge all over the world, from London to Paris, New York to New Mexico, and even right here in Vancouver.
For this blog story we have decided to highlight a hugely successful project recently completed using Hydrotech Waterproofing and Garden Roof systems, in an iconic downtown Vancouver public building. Cornelia Oberlander a noted landscape architect was responsible for the design of the semi-intense Garden Roof now installed on the Vancouver Public Library - a building that is unlike any other in Vancouver. The green space on the roof is a rectangular space that has been redesigned for purely aesthetic purposes, and is well appreciated by the occupiers of the surrounding buildings who get the pleasure of looking at a superbly designed green space.
Many of you don’t realize but the rooftop of the Vancouver Public Library is protected by an incredible gorgeous garden!
Hydrotech’s Garden Roof® Assembly allows the design professional to transform virtually any flat or sloped roof (up to 12:12 pitch) into a landscaped green roof environment. Designed as a lightweight, low profile system, Hydrotech'se Garden Roof® Assembly can be safely installed on roof and plaza decks not engineered to handle the heavy load requirements of a traditional green roof. And because the assembly incorporates a proven roofing/waterproofing membrane, Hydrotech’s Monolithic Membrane 6125®, the building owner can be assured of a water-tight structure.
Some of the advantages of the Garden Roof® Assembly include:
- Enhances building’s appearance
- Adds space for tenant use and recreation
- Reduces the “Urban Heat Island” problem
- Controls stormwater – retain 50%-90% of a typical rain fall on the roof
- Improves building’s energy efficiency
- Processes airborne toxins and re-oxygenates the air
- Creates therapeutic and peaceful environments
- Offers a Total Assembly Warranty… from the deck up
