Vancouver Green Roof Bylaws

Vancouver will soon lead the world in green building design and construction, thanks to the innovative Greenest City Action Plan. As part of this initiative, the City of Vancouver is working to reduce the amount of energy consumed by the city's new homes 33% by 2020, with the goal of making all new buildings "carbon neutral" by 2030. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions from existing buildings will be reduced by 20% over 2007 levels.

How Vancouver is Meeting These Green Building Targets

The City is implementing a wide range of green building programs and policies to help reach this ambitious target, including the Green Homes program - included as part of this are many local bylaws that have been introduced subsequent to the BCIT paper on Regulatory Options for Promoting Green Roofs in British Columbia.

Surrounding conurbations in the BC lower Mainland are also implicated - Port Coquitlam Green Roof By-law: All new commercial and industrial buildings over 5000 square meters must have a green roof. The city has also just enacted a zoning development bylaw, which allows a developer to be exempt from development permit fees if a green roof is planned with no variances.

Richmond Proposed Green Roof By-law: Office and industrial developments that are 2,000 square meters or larger would need a minimum of 100 green points, which could be achieved through the development of a green roof, meeting a LEED Silver standard, or using the roof for parking and landscaping the grounds.
